We were supposed to arrive at the hospital this morning at 9:30 am for an 11:15 am surgery. We got a call just before walking out the door saying that Jill's surgeon had to perform an emergency surgery and that we would be delayed until 12:40 pm. So we arrived at the hospital around 11:00 am. Then we found out that all surgeries had been delayed for an hour or so due to a "controlled" burn on a nearby structure that the fire department failed to control. The smoke had entered the hospital's ventilation system.
Well, after several delays, Jill's surgery finally started at 5:00 pm. Her 3-1/2 hour surgery turned into a 6-1/2 hour surgery, ending at 11:30 pm. The first 3-1/2 hours were spent cleaning up the scar tissue from her first surgery. Her bowel had been slightly twisted in one location with a lot of scar tissue build-up, which would explain some of Jill's difficulty with bowel movements. Jill did have a hiatal hernia as suspected. After repairing that, she had a fundoplication performed (top of stomach wrapped around the esophagus to prevent acid reflux issues). Finally, she had a feeding tube installed, which we're hoping can be taken out in as little as a couple of months.
Jill looked pretty good following surgery. She is on a ventilator and is heavily sedated until tomorrow sometime (well actually today, since it is 1:10 am right now). Judy is staying overnight in Jill's room while I headed home. Judy plans on staying with Jill during her entire hospital stay.
The long surgery didn't seem quite so long since our friends from church, Mike and Deana Lee, spent the entire time with us. We have now adopted them as our church parents. We had such a great conversation that we didn't dwell on the fact that our daughter's insides were being tampered with by a man in blue scrubs.
We are thankful to have our good friend Virginia Imlah staying with us to help out watching Katelyn. Virginia and her nearly 2-year-old son, Randall, drove here from Bremerton, Washington, to help us out in a big way.
We'll keep you posted on Jill's recovery. Thank you for all of your prayers.
In November 2007, our unborn daughter was found to have a condition called Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), which occurs in 1 out of every 2,500 pregnancies. Basically, our daughter’s diaphragm had a hole in it that had allowed her stomach, liver, and some intestines to pass into the upper regions of her chest cavity. Her chest was too overcrowded to allow her lungs to fully develop. She was given slim odds to survive and worse odds to thrive.
Our daughter, Jillian Olivia, was born in the Spring of 2008. Since her birth, Jill had two surgeries during her first year and has since thrived.
We started this site to chronicle our experiences throughout this journey and to keep our family members and friends up-to-date on Jill's condition. Now we use this site to update others on what's going on in our lives.
